The Aam Aadmi Party notified the Delhi Solar Policy 2023 on Saturday, under which residents consuming over 400 units of electricity, and having solar panels installed on their roofs, will get zero electricity bills.
The Delhi government already provides 200 units of free electricity to every household and, under the Delhi Solar Policy 2023, even those consuming over 400 units of electricity will have their bills reduced to zero if they have solar panels installed. Currently, residents consuming 201 to 400 units of electricity get a 50 per cent subsidy on their bills.
In a statement, the Delhi government also said that under the policy, the money spent on solar panels will be recovered within the next four years because of several subsidies.
With the announcement of the new policy, the Delhi government, for the first time, will provide a capital subsidy to consumers of Rs 2,000 per kW for installation up to a maximum of Rs 10,000 per consumer. This will be over and above the capital subsidy of the central government, according to a report by news agency PTI.
If one installs a 3-kilowatt capacity solar panel, the Delhi government will deposit Rs 3 per unit of electricity generated into their bank account. Similarly, if one installs solar panels with a capacity of three to 10 kilowatts, money will be deposited at the rate of Rs 2 per unit. The government will provide the incentive for a period of five years.
On the announcement of the policy, Delhi Power Minister Atishi, said, "Our aim is to have 50% of Delhi''s total electricity usage sourced from solar energy by 2027. The Delhi government will also make provision for power generation assessment. For this, the government will collaborate with certain institutions that would assess the capacity of power generation across Delhi using satellite technology. This will relieve consumers from the burden of estimating the potential power generation capacity on their rooftops."
The statement said that if a government building has a rooftop area of 500 square meters, it is mandatory for them to install solar panels. Within three years of the implementation of the policy, solar panels will have to be installed on the rooftops of all government buildings, it stated.
Earlier, the AAP government had issued the Delhi Solar Policy 2016, under which the capital region already has solar panels, generating 1,500 megawatts of power.
