"Rural Honduras is a place with many faces: Ecological abundance collides with extreme economic poverty. Scenic beauty surrounds social violence. Preserving local nature and strengthening financial stability must go hand in hand. It makes us all the happier that Offgridsun solutions can now contribute to this cause".
Our Honduran partner Innovative Business Solutions (IBS) has installed 182 solar systems for the United Nations Development Program (UNDP). First of all, the aim or the Small Grants Program (PPD) is a to strengthen community participation in environmental management and sustainable development. In other words, the organised community develops alternatives that use and manage the ecosystem sustainably. At the same time, this generates sources of environmentally responsible income.
Now four rural communities with conditions of extreme poverty are developing projects. They improve their living conditions, allow children to study in the evening and found little enterprises. Soon, a video will show the results of the project. Offgridsun will be happy to follow up and find out which progress the people of the project have made.
It is believed that improving electricity access is a great way to mitigate energy poverty. Hence, electrification has usually been a key priority for decision-makers in low-income countries. But what if electricity connections mainly benefit relatively wealthy people?
The relationship between energy consumption and economic growth has drawn considerable academic interest, and it is believed that a well-functioning energy sector provides a promising avenue to sustain economic development (Sokhanvar and Sohag 2022; Lee et al. 2016). However, the role of household electrification in mitigating energy poverty is a topic that has received very little attention.
Most low-income countries still face lack of electricity access, and limited financial resources is the main challenge preventing them from achieving the United Nation''s Sustainable Development Goal 7 (Batinge et al. 2019). The other factors contributing to this problem include the low revenue collection in the electricity sector, deteriorating power plants (Trimble et al. 2016), unreliable services, and limited generation capacity (Duarte et al. 2010).
According to the Luzi et al. (2019), Honduras is a low-middle-income country that 11% of its population does not have access to electricity. There is a substantial difference between electricity access rates in rural and urban areas. 98% of urban households have grid electricity access compared to 69% in rural areas. While 8% of people in rural areas use off-grid solutions (mainly solar), 22% of households do not have any kind of electricity access.
Second, unlike previous studies that used household income as a proxy of household welfare, the household total expenditure is employed in this study to analyze the impact of welfare on energy poverty. Household income is private information that households may not be willing to share or may provide inaccurate numbers. It is recommended to use the expenditures data to understand the welfare level of households, because the data on household expenditures provides much more reliable and accurate information on the household''s welfare.
The article proceeds as follows. A review of the most relevant studies is presented in the next section. Section "Data and methodology" describes the data and methodology employed in this study. Section "Empirical results" discusses the findings, while Section "Conclusions and policy implications" presents the conclusions.
