BAKU, AZERBAIJAN — In a bold stride towards renewable energy leadership, Azerbaijan has unveiled its first commercial solar energy project, integrating cutting-edge Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) technology.
Spearheaded by Malaysia’s Citaglobal Bhd, this 5.4 MW solar photovoltaic (PV) facility will power the Port of Baku, marking a transformative moment in the nation’s energy journey.
Witnesses to the signing included Datuk Dr. Ching Thoo, Secretary General of Malaysia''s Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability, and Ambassador Ahmad Kamrizamil Mohd Riza, Malaysia''s representative in Azerbaijan.
Developed by Tiza Green Energy LLC—a joint venture between Tiza Global Azerbaijan LLC and Citaglobal Renewable Energy Sdn Bhd—the project promises to reshape energy consumption at the Port of Baku.
With a 21-year Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) guaranteeing fixed tariffs, the port will enjoy predictable energy costs while significantly reducing reliance on traditional power grids.
Leveraging Citaglobal’s MYBESS technology, the port will be able to store excess solar energy for use during peak demand, ensuring nearly 100% reliance on renewable energy at competitive rates.
Spanning 400 hectares, the Port of Baku plays a critical role in Eurasian trade as a hub on the Trans-Caspian International Transport Route. Its current expansion aims to increase annual cargo capacity to 25 million tons, including 500,000 TEU containers. Amid this growth, the port is doubling down on sustainable practices, striving for zero emissions by 2035 as part of its Climate Action Plan.
"This agreement marks a milestone in Azerbaijan''s renewable energy journey, combining solar power and BESS technology to deliver cost-effective, sustainable energy solutions," said Tan Sri Dr. Norza Zakaria, President of Tiza Green Energy LLC and Executive Chairman of Citaglobal.
Port of Baku Director-General Dr. Taleh Ziyadov highlighted the project’s transformative impact, stating, "As the Caspian region’s first Green Port since 2019, our partnership with Tiza Green Energy strengthens our strategy to achieve zero emissions.
Set against the backdrop of COP 29, this milestone underscores Azerbaijan''s growing role in tackling climate change and advancing renewable energy solutions. With the Port of Baku leading by example, the country''s renewable energy ambitions are well on track, offering a replicable model for sustainable growth across the region.
DescriptionArctech Baku Solar PV Park is a ground-mounted solar project which is planned over 550 hectares. The project is expected to generate 500,000MWh of electricity.
