The Ten Merina project consists of the design, construction, financing, operation and maintenance of a 30 MWp solar power plant and the construction of a 3-km transmission line on behalf of the client Senelec, the Senegalese electricity utility.
The project is located near Mbouky, approximately 145 km from Dakar. Tenergie, the initial developer of the project, signed a 25-year Power Purchase Agreement with Senelec at the end of December 2013. Meridiam partnered with Eiffage and joined the project as majority shareholder to finalize the development phase and raise the financing required for financial close. As part of the partnership set with FONSIS, the latter was invited to join Ten Merina through the acquisition of 10% of the share capital in Q4 2017.
This is Meridiam''s second solar power project in Senegal, delivering an additional reliable supply of low-cost and low-carbon electricity. Overall, Ten Merina is a significant contributor to Senegal''s installed solar PV capacity and is providing clean and affordable power to more than 200,000 Senegalese people.
A dedicated team is in charge of supervising Meridiam''s four solar plants in Senegal. The plant therefore benefits from pooled resources and return of experience.
A maternity unit Merina Ndakhar – Due to the difficulties encountered by the population to reach the nearest hospital, and in the context of a voluntary agreement with the local community, the Project Company opted to finance the construction of a maternity unit in Ten Merina village.
Educational content with Kajou – As part of the continuous improvement and capacity building of the population affected by the project ("PAP"), the Project Company has collaborated with Kajou (a social enterprise created by Libraries Without Borders in 2019) to distribute SD cards containing educational videos, texts and audio content in local language (Wolof dialect) (dealing with agriculture, livestock health etc.).An evaluation will be done in 2023 to ensure best relevance of the content.
Energy Resources Senegal (ERS) has signed an agreement with South Africa-based investment firm Climate Fund Managers (CFM) for the co-development of a solar power plant in Niakhar, Senegal.
The project consists of a 30 MW photovoltaic power plant combined with a battery system with a capacity of 15 MW/45 MWh. According to the investor, this will be the first solar power infrastructure integrating storage in the country. "This first project with ERS will provide clean energy to over 150,000 people," said Sebastian Surie, CFM''s regional director for Africa.
Under the terms of the agreement, ERS will be the infrastructure developer and will be responsible for the construction and operation of the $40 million plant. “After the commissioning of our first photovoltaic solar power plant in Senegal in 2018, this project confirms our ambition to become a key player in carbon-free energies on the continent,” says Moustapha Sène, CEO of ERS, who aims to set up 500 MW of renewable energy capacity by 2025.
Senegal''s installed capacity is currently largely thermal, fueled by fuel, explains the CFM in a press release. However, the country is one of the first in West Africa to pass a renewable energy law and is considered by CFM to be one of the pioneers in the sector.
According to the latest statistics from the International Renewable Energy Agency, Senegal had an installed PV capacity of 134 MW at the end of 2019. Most of this capacity comes from large scale PV, but several off-grid projects were also built in the country over the past years.
